Newfoundland dogs were bred on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The dog breed was created on the island from other dog species that were brought in on fishing boats from European fishermen.
Newfoundland dogs are a member of the American Kennel Club's working group. They have jobs in search and rescue, guardians, haul wood, carry boat lines, a pack and supply carrier and cart pulling. In World War II during blizzards the Newfoundland dogs were used to haul ammunition and supplies. In 1919, a Newfie dog pulled a lifeboat with 20 shipwreck survivors to safety and received a gold medal for the effort. They are used in Europe to patrol beaches and the Coast Guard are using Newfoundland dogs to jump from helicopters for water rescues.
